6-color system - To print good quality photos
you'll need a six color photo printer that adds light magenta and light cyan
inks to the four color system for better skin tones and gradations. Now a
days inkjets usually use pigmented black inks so sometimes you'll see five
color or seven color units that add a black photo ink to the mix.
8 color system - Some printer manufacturers have
come out with their own eight ink systems to create even higher quality
prints. At the present time none of these new printer systems use the same
color inks. For example, a Canon 19950 is optimized to emulate positive film
by adding green and red inks.
